Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The location, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."
During December, the US military executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
