Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
