Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes are granted the right to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
